Send the drive back — your data lives on
Before you ship it back, copy your files off and reformat the drive. Anything left on it can't be recovered once it ships. Drop the drive in the prepaid return box. The hardware goes home; your archive stays safe in the cloud, ready to restore whenever the next version, re-cut, or re-license comes calling.

Free replacement if a drive fails
We monitor drive health the whole rental. If a unit fails in the field, we ship a replacement free — your project keeps moving and your data stays protected.
How does the deposit work? +
Two separate things happen to your card at checkout. The rental fee — the flat rate for the drive and term you picked — is charged right away. The deposit is not: it's a pre-authorization hold for the drive's full replacement value, placed on the same card straight after payment. Please note that the deposit is a temporary authorization, not a charge. It may show as pending on your statement while the drive is out and may temporarily reduce your available credit or account balance. While the drive is out, we renew the hold automatically every few days, so a new pending authorization may appear on your statement. When the drive comes back in good working condition we release the hold in full; your bank can take a few business days to clear it. You'll see the exact hold amount — for example "Deposit hold: $969" — before you pay.
How do returns work? +
Every rental ships with a prepaid return label and reusable packaging. Your rental term starts the day the drive is delivered, and your due date is in your shipping email. When your term ends, seal the drive back in the box, drop it with the carrier, and you're done. We recommend archiving to AvastorX Cloud before it goes out so your project is safe the moment the hardware leaves your desk.
What happens to my data? +
We ask you to reformat the drive before returning it. Either way, every returned drive goes straight into our monitored tech lab, where it's erased and sanitized with dedicated equipment before it's rented again. As a GSA federal supplier, we routinely handle drives from highly sensitive environments.
Can I keep the drive? +
Yes. While your rental is out, the link in your shipping email shows your price: the drive's recertified price minus the rent you paid on this rental. If you keep it, we charge that amount against your deposit hold (or your card on file if the hold has expired) and release the rest of the hold. The drive is yours, with nothing to send back. A kept drive carries the same 1-year warranty as our recertified drives, starting the day you keep it.
What are the late and damage policies? +
Need more time? Extend your term before it ends and you'll just pay the difference to the longer rate. Drives kept past the term without an extension accrue a daily late fee, capped at the drive's replacement value; past 7 days overdue the drive is treated as unreturned and the replacement value is charged. Normal wear is expected and never charged — damage beyond it (bent connectors, drops, liquid) is captured from the deposit hold, and whatever isn't needed is released. How do I actually rent one? +
It's self-service. Pick a category, capacity, and term, accept the Rental Agreement, and check out through Stripe — we never see your card number. We're notified the moment payment clears, pick the unit off the shelf, and ship it with a prepaid return label. US shipping addresses only for now.
